FAQ’S

Q. Will you accept payments on gunstock carving?

A.  Yes, you can send a 50% deposit to get the carving started.  The remainder is due within 30 days.

Q. What methods of payment are available online?

A. With the use of PayPal Shopping Cart, you are able to use any major credit card to make a secure purchase.  If you wish to pay your deposit for gunstock carving by credit card,  please indicate that on your order form and we will send an invoice via Paypal.  You do not need to send us your credit card information.  This is our way of making sure all transactions are secure.

Q. I believe my gunstock is made of Birch, can you do a carving on Birch?

A. Birch is a soft, supple wood which that will not hold the fine detail that is required for

gunstock carving, consequently, I prefer a dense hardwood such as Walnut, Maple or

Rosewood.  Neither you, nor I, will be pleased with the results on your birch gunstock.

Q. How long will it take to get my gunstock back?

A. I get started on your gun as soon as it comes into the shop, however the completion of

your gunstock can take upwards of 4-6 weeks.  Pistol grips on the other hand, is a faster

process.  If you are in a hurry, or you have a special event and you need your gunstock

back prior to that, please let us know.  We do have a small service charge for

rush orders, but we can work after hours to complete your gunstock ASAP.

Q. My husband has a favorite gun from when he would go pheasant hunting when

he was young.  I’d love to surprise him on his birthday with a carving on his

gunstock, however I would want him to pick out the carving.  How can I do

    this?

A. How about a gift certificate?  We can write a gift certificate for any amount, as well as

we could include a variety of patterns to choose from. (To order a gift certificate,

   simply…

Q. How can I place my order?

A. It depends on what you are ordering.

If you are ordering a completed product such as a knife from the Knife Gallery or Pistol

Grips from the Carving Gallery, you can simply “buy now” and you will be delivered to a

Paypal Shopping Cart, which is one of the most secure ways to purchase products on-

line.  If you wish to use mail order, fill out the Order Form and mail it to the address

listed on the form.  (Please keep in mind that we do not mass produce any of our

products, in other words… there is only one of a kind.  Sadly, we have to process orders

in the first come first serve basis, consequently some items may sell prior to receiving

  your order through the mail.)

If you are ordering a custom carving, you can order online or through the mail with a

check or money order, however it is highly recommended that you discuss your custom

work prior to mailing your order.

Q. I have pistol grips that I would love to have some checkering done on, can

    you do checkering?

A. The fine art of checkering on most guns today is very poor in comparison to what it used

to be. Because of the intricate detail, checkering today is done by machine and although

good, the results are just not as detailed as by hand. The time it takes to complete a

checkering project, is just as labor intensive as relief carving, but not as unique or a

True “Custom” work of art.  You might consider a basketweave carving pattern instead.

Q. Can I place an order by telephone?

A. We will be glad to discuss any and all of your concerns or questions over the phone,

However, the Order Form has pertinent information that we will need from you. Since

the order form is required; phone orders will not be possible.

Q. How will my stock be finished when it is done?

A. Depends on what you would like.  If you are just ordering the carving on your gunstock,

it would be finished with a wood sealer to seal the wood. The second step will then

include a very light coat of hand rubbed linseed oil, so as not to upset the integrity of

the carving and color in relation to the gunstock.

We can also refinish the entire gunstock for a refinishing fee of $125. You will find this to

be a reasonable fee and consists of taking out the scratches and dents and repairing any

cracks.  Then we will do three coats of hand rubbed linseed oil for the final finish. Keep

in mind the linseed oil will make the stock darker but will show off the grain of the

    wood.

Q. What methods of payment are available online?

A. With the use of PayPal Shopping Cart, you are able to use any major credit card.

Q. Explain relief carving.

A. Relief Carving is a form of carving in which shapes and figures are distinguished from a

surrounding pane surface.  There are three types of relief carving: high, middle & low.

In high and middle relief gunstock carving, the design projects beyond its surface plane

of the stock.  For such carvings, additional wood must be left in appropriate areas during

the initial shaping of the stock.  In low relief carving, wood is removed from around a

design, and the design’s high points while at stock surface level appear to be raised from

    that surface.

Q. Will you use my pattern on my gun for me?

A. We can definitely look at your pattern. The design is critical and can not be overstated,

consequently, there are a few things that need to be considered: 1st the composition of

the pattern for the area,  2nd would be the degree of clarity of the images, and lastly,

the degree of alteration that will be necessary. We won’t need to worry about size, that

   can always be adjusted.

Q. Can I piece two patterns to make one?

A. Yes, we will piece a pattern with the two patterns and see how it will relate to the space

on your gun.  Then we will fax or e-mail the final draft for your signature approval prior

to starting your gun carving. If you want to piece the pattern that will be great, however

you will need to sign off on the pattern before we begin.

Q. What do I need to do to prepare my gun before I send it?

A. You will need to separate the gunstock from the gun itself.  I only need the wood

gunstock.   Click Here to review guidelines for sending your gunstock.

Q. What are the most common requested designs?

A. With the many different arrangement variations in the leaves and acorns, the oak leaf

seems to be the leaf most often used for carving. With the proper design for the area of

the gunstock or grip, it can work as an accent or as a feature which stands on its own,

very well.  As for a scene, most clients will choose the game that they hunt.

Q. Can I have my order shipped to a Post Office Box?

A. Yes we will ship to your Post Office Box, however it is our preference to ship to an actual

home or office address.  In order to better serve you, we always look for the most

reasonable shipping rate. UPS will not deliver to a PO Box possibly causing your shipping

to be at a higher rate.

Q. Can you ship outside of the US?

A. No. with the mailing/shipping requirements of firearm parts and products, we can

   only ship within the US.

Q. How do I know if my custom order was received?

A. You will receive either an e-mail if we have your e-mail address or a post card with in 5

days, notifying that we have received your order.

Q. How will I know when my order is on its way back & how will I track it?

A. You will receive either an e-mail, if we have your e-mail address, or a post card notifying

You that we have shipped your order and it will include the shipping order.

Q. Who do I contact if I need more help?

A. Contact Jerry Becker by phone @ 970-417-6422 or

    e-mail JB@TheGunstockCarver.com
